Shepard was the first teacher in the Willamette Mission to the Indians. He was born on August 14, 1798 at Acton, Massachusetts and died at the
Mission just as the year 1839 was ending and 1840 was beginning. Shepard accompanied Jason Lee on the first cross-continent trip to the Mission.

This journal was kept en route and for a brief time after arriving in Oregon. The original of this diary was given to Willamette University by Shepard’s niece, Alice Shepard and her niece, Mrs. Clara Traxel of Creswell, Oregon.
